"People go to Key West for lots of different reasons. Joey Goldman went there to become a gangster..." So begins this classic Key West caper, the hilarious and touching book that launched a much-loved series and introduced the world to Bert the Shirt and his chihuahua Don Giovanni, two of the most unforgettable characters in contemporary fiction. Joey, the illegitimate son of a major NY mafioso, decides to break away from a decidedly unpromising future in the old neighborhood of Queens. But will the old neighborhood and the Family let him go in peace? Not if knucklehead half-brother Gino has anything to say about it. As Joey is finally establishing his new life in sunny Florida, Gino involves him in a disastrous scam featuring a boatload of stolen emeralds and several squads of very nasty thugs. Finding within himself resources of smarts and courage he never knew he had, Joey beats long odds and muddles through to a brilliant solution to the problems dumped on him by Gino. Cleverly plotted, enlivened by pitch-perfect dialogue, FLORIDA STRAITS is a completely satisfying mystery, but it's more than that as well. Think of it as a fish-out-of-water coming-of-age novel, a comedy of very bad manners with an unlikely hero you will root for from page one.

Florida Straits Key West Capers Volume 1 Laurence Shames Books Reviews
I got the last one... read the review and decided to start with the first. So glad I did although not totally necessary. Anyway this is number one and it and all that follow don't disappoint. Great series.. great author. New to me and I had to email him to thank him for going the ebook way so I could read them all on my kindle. I SMILE when I read these books... and I like it. I am entertained... I look forward to reading it. I hope he keeps writing them... I'm hooked.
I almost put it down to select another book to read. I plugged along and soon I wanted to read more a lot more. A younger gofer for a mafia family whose name is Joey breaks away from the family and the family business branches out for himself to Key West, Florida. It pointed out a lot of things about KW I never thought about. He turns legit and makes his way until his big brother messes things up for him. Key West is Joey's turf and he ends up with a deal that makes his Dad proud and offers to set him up back home in the family rackets.
Florida Straits was my first Laurence Shames book. I was hooked. His characters become family. I don't like to tell what the book is about in a review because you can read that elsewhere. My experience reading the book was pure entertainment, with a sprinkling of the profound and moving. Shames is a smart writer. He doesn't have to repeat himself or overwrite his descriptions. He's subtle yet clear so you don't feel like you're reading a cheap formula novel. His plots are clever and engaging. Needless to say, I have read them all and emailed him to get moving on the next one. ) I just ordered his latest - Shot on Location - and can't wait to get into it. So far he hasn't disappointed me even a little.
Love the storyline and the antics of the lead characters ex-New Yorkers Joey and his lady friend Sandra. Worth the read ... so much so that i am now going to read the next book in the series and probably the ones after that.
After having read and enjoyed all of the Key West capers written by Laurence. Shames, this was truly one of his best. His other books all hold the same charm for me. It's like opening the book and being drawn into the Keys as his prose assaults all the senses making you feel you are there. My affection for all of his works has turned into adoration.
Pretty good book set in my favorite vacation spot, Key West. Characters are interesting and Shames gives several of them some wit and humor. The plot is not along the lines of Baldacci or Child or anything like that, but I don't think he intends to be like them either. These are light reads with some twists and suspense. Pretty good, but not top 10 great. They're also fairly quick reads as well.
People who live in Florida sometimes get used to the characters who seem to become a part of the state's cast of players. Like a play in a theater or a movie screen in a multiplex, the Florida ensemble often includes people who exist on the edge of society like gangsters, bad guys, whackos and other assorted miscreants.
Laurence Shames has written an amazing series of novels based on life in the southernmost city in the United States - Key West, Florida. Some of the players in these terrific books are related to what has been called "The Mob" or the Mafia. What's amazing about these books is the overriding sense of humor that ripples from the first page to the end. Not unlike the very popular books by Carl Hiassen, also South Florida-based, the characters from one of the books will turn up in others of the series. Whichever one you pick up, you're in for a really rollicking ride.
In "Florida Straits", Joey Goldman, the illegitimate son of a mob boss, decides he wants to start a new life away from the world of organized crime. So he chooses Key West as his adopted new home and off we go. Rather than get too much into the storyline in this review, just be sure to know that you're going to enjoy reading this. A lot. A whole lot. Laughing in every chapter, you'll enjoy yourself start to finish.
I happened to mention to another author whose work is a little different, but is also South Florida based how much I enjoyed his work and he pointed me to Laurence Shames' books. The author is Paul Levine, who has written novels about lawyers living and working is the South Florida area.
So I read one of Shames' other books, "Sunburn" and thoroughly enjoyed it. Many of the characters from "Sunburn" were also in "Florida Straits." After reading the first one, I went onto and bought all the rest of the series - a total of nine books. I fully expect to enjoy the rest of them as much as I did the first two.
Do yourself a big favor and either get these books for easy weekend (or beach) reading and get ready to find yourself with another new favorite author.
